Western manufacturing corporations have pursued a traditional, schedule-based philosophy that is based on manufacturing and MRP computer systems. Over the last 25 years, these systems have made dramatic improvements in the speed and efficiency of production. But in a world of increasing customization and accelerating time-to-market requirements, the never-ending quest to be LEAN represents new and daunting challenges for companies. To remain competitive in the global market place, manufacturers must look to new business strategies to serve their customers with quality service and price in an efficient manner.

We believe that no push based systems, however sophisticated and responsive, can address these challenges. The basic philosophy and principles that MRP based manufacturing is based upon, have failed to deliver. With increased algorithmic sophistication and processing speed, these tools have only become difficult to understand and maintain. This in turn compromises their usability with diminishing effectiveness and increasing the costs of ownership.

LEAN manufacturing, on the other hand, is simple. It is demand driven. The supply is centrally paced using a pacemaker and the rest of the supply chain acts in a synchronized flow. The signals for actions are visual. Hence, it is easy to understand and implement.

LEAN comes with its own challenges though. Products are seldom built within the four walls of a factory today. Local visual systems are highly inadequate in the present electronic device dominant environment. Today’s interconnected supply chains are scattered with demand peaks and valleys. This variability travels much faster across supply chains. As a result, planning, scheduling, execution, and inventories have to be constantly adjusted. Such a business environment is not conducive to LEAN.
